Read Time: 2 Minutes
Three books, one credit, written by an author I have enjoyed in the past? Yes please! In the mood for something light and absurd, this looked just the ticket. I’d been sitting on it for ages and finally got around to giving it a listen.
The story takes a while to get moving. We meet Bip Plunkerton and Handen Strike, two members quite removed from each other but part of the crew of survivors who crash landed on Bersch and entangled in an apocalyptic problem. The looming threat, a giant ball of death made from the discarded nuclear weapons of a long dead race. The humour is understated and dry. I never laughed out loud, but I smiled often enough.
Bip and Handen are polar opposites. Bip is mostly useless, and Handen very adept at fighting, and everything really. Of the two, I enjoyed the Handen chapters more, and when the story was more focussed on him rather than Bip.
Bip, is a wannabe “psyentist” – people can manipulate reality with their minds – but is terrible at it. Mostly played for laughs, but I thought the concepts behind how it worked were interesting.
As a complete trilogy, it all worked well and tied together nicely. Because I listened straight through, I’d be hard pressed to tell you where one ended and the next began, but I don’t think that really matters. I was just too busy enjoying the story.
The main hurdle I had was the narration. CC Hogan has a very deep, gravelly, bass-heavy voice. Not bad, but it sounds like it should be narrating grimdark space battles rather than mild British sci fi comedy.
Overall, easy to get into and listen for hours at a time. Nothing too deep, but some good jokes, some chuckles, and a few new ideas explored.
