Read Time: 2 Minutes
Dead Tired III picks up right where the previous books left off as Harold, the ancient and overpowered lich, continues his journey with Alex, the Limpet, the mantis sisters, and a penchant for puns that are as groan-worthy as they are funny.
As before, this is a fairly straightforward stroll through the countryside for Harold. Being so absurdly overpowered means nothing, like literally nothing, is a problem for him or can stand in his way. Harold is still trying to find what has happened to his phylacteries while also reinstalling himself as overlord of the continent.
Limpet is left in charge of the city they sacked in the last book, so we get to see growth of her as she struggles to prepare the city for an inevitable war against the throne. The mantis sisters are just as stupid, though I didn’t find them quite as annoying this time. Rem is still psychotic ans stupid (or is that psychotically stupid?), and Mem remains brainless but with a heart of gold.
I’ll be keeping this review short so to not spoil things. I mentioned in my previous review I wasn’t sure if I’d continue, and while obviously I did, I’m still of that opinion. The story is easy to listen to and so low-stakes it’s practically zero-stakes but that’s part of its charm.
Narration by Justin Thomas James and the team at Soundbooth Theater (SBT) kick the whole story up a notch (as usual), bringing the performance that captures the story’s whimsical tone. Quality is, as always, excellent. Just as I have come to expect from SBT.
So overall, more of the same fun and absurdly overpowered romp through a world of cultivators who don’t know what’s about to hit them. Plenty of puns to make you groan, and plenty of light-hearted adventure proving that death really is just the beginning.
