Some series are just too good to let go without a final word, and Maud’s undead adventures certainly deserve a proper send-off. Over the course of five books, the delightful and merciless Maud Greenleaf has charmed, amused, and horrified in equal measure. From her accidental transformation into a lich to her rise as a ruler of a forest, a haunted castle, a city and the country each book has been a joy to experience, blending dark comedy, slice-of-life moments, and thrilling action into something truly special.
At its heart, this series is about a young woman who was a witch in a small forest village who, through a stroke of misfortune, becomes an incredibly powerful lich. Maud just wants to enjoy her afterlife in peace in the same way she lived, tending her garden, embroidering, and making pretty things.
She still tries do most of that but now also must make sure her minions don’t have the odd body part falling off them and are properly dressed, and dealing with the endless stream of paladins, rival liches, and gods who have a problem with her existence. But Maud isn’t one to back down, not when there’s new lace to buy or an inconsiderate person stomps their way through her flower garden.
All shall bend before the might of Maud and her siege weapons whether it’s an invading army or an uncooperative piece of fabric. With Jenkins, her faithful undead cat, and a collection of odd and terrifying allies at her side, she faces each challenge with wit, determination, and a touch of necromantic flair.
Narrated brilliantly by Ella Lynch, the series truly comes to life (or un-life, as the case may be). Her portrayal of Maud captures the character’s charm perfectly, making even the most gruesome moments feel oddly cozy. The balance between humour and horror is masterfully handled, making the series an absolute delight for anyone who enjoys a bit of morbid fun.
If you’re curious about the series, you should check out my reviews. I’ve reviewed most books in the series (as I write this, I realised I forgot to review book four!) and you can check these out here:
Just for fun, I fed a bunch of keywords and descriptions from the series into Bing’s Image Creator (an AI image generation tool that seems to be popular at the moment) to create the image you see at the top of the page. I think it captures the feeling!
If you haven’t yet started this series, I can’t recommend it enough. Maud Greenleaf is such a charming and fun character to root for. If you have read it, I’d love to hear your thoughts – after all, every lich deserves a good discussion about their legacy!
