Read Time: 4 Minutes
The year isn’t over yet, but it stills feels like the perfect time to look back over the audiobooks I’ve reviewed so far and highlight a few that truly stood out. It’s been an incredible year for audiobooks. Plenty of fantastic listens, with just a handful of stinkers that ultimately weren’t even that terrible. They just didn’t quite hit the mark for me. All told, I’ve had the pleasure of listening to and reviewing over sixty new audiobooks this year, and the experience has both entertaining and immersive.
When I wasn’t diving into fresh stories, I found myself revisiting many old favourites, some of which have been in my rotation for years. Suffice it to say that thousands of hours of audio have streamed through my trusty earbuds in 2024 alone – so much so that I might need to ask Santa for a new pair this Christmas. They’ve certainly earned their retirement!
So, without further ado, join me as I look back over the year that was.
Favourite New Series
This was a tough choice because there were three standouts in series I started this year. After much though, A Pub in the Underworld gets my nod for favourite new series I started this year. Two honourable mentions in this category are ShipCore and Heretical Fishing which were others I also highly enjoyed. Click through my reviews of each!
Favourite Finished Series
Not a heap of choices in this category as many of the series I am following are still in progress. Two though made it to the end of the series this year, and for me my vote for favourite is going to Vigor Mortis. Even though the production quality is kind of rough, the story is still excellent. As is Jake’s Magical Market, but since I’m making myself choose a favourite, I made the choice to rank it a close second.
Favourite Short Stories
Out of three short story compilations I had the pleasure of listening to this year, Early Adopter is my pick of the three. The other two in the Sci-Fi Shorts series were also good, but Early Adopter was a real stand-out.
You’d be forgiven for thinking the only thing I listen to is litRPG / fantasy based on the audiobooks above. That’s understandable though since that is what I generally listen to, but I do branch out from time to time with others.
Favourite Non-Fiction
Easy choice for me in this category – Strong Female Character. I stumbled upon Fern Brady while diving down a comedy rabbit hole on YouTube and had to know more about her. Her memoir of her early childhood struggles of growing up with undiagnosed autism through to becoming a successful stand-up comedian is one that’ll listen to more than once. An honourable mention for A Bit of a Stretch which followed the author’s stay at Her Majesty’s pleasure.
Others I Enjoyed
It’s simply not possible to list out every book I enjoyed this year, but it’s worth calling out the ones I particularly enjoyed. In no particular order, other audiobooks I enjoyed the heck out were…
Relistens
Okay, so most of these didn’t come out in 2024 nor did I listen to them for the first time in 2024… but when I wasn’t listening to new stuff, I was visiting some old favourites. I have so many to choose from, therefore (and again in no particular order) some of my favourites relistens this year were…
Still More To Come
The year isn’t yet over and there is still plenty of time left for more great listens. I’m looking forward to a whole bunch of books I have on pre-order that’ll be coming out over the next few months, plus probably heaps I’ve not even heard of yet.
