Read Time: 5 Minutes
If you like your audiobooks with a side of absurdity, moral ambiguity, or gentle farming chores, you’re in luck. This month I survived crabs with commerce obsessions, sexy and violent vampires (are there any other kind?)… a trilogy about a doomed ball of death, and a farm that refuses to hurry.
These Quick Takes slice each listen down to the essentials and whether I’d press play again, all in under 100 words. Read fast, judge faster, and pick the one that promises the exact level of chaos or calm you need right now.
Here are the quick takes.
The Satsuma Complex & The Hotel Avocado
Bob Mortimer’s The Satsuma Complex and its follow-up The Hotel Avocado feel like one long, gently chaotic story about Gary Thorn, an unremarkable man swept into low-stakes conspiracies, missing people, and odd encounters he barely understands. Mortimer’s meandering, cosy style leans more toward character study than mystery, full of domestic tangents, talking animals, and endearingly scruffy narration. Sally Phillips and the expanded cast in the second book add warmth and texture. Listened back-to-back, the pair form a funny, off-kilter, quietly comforting whole—never thrilling, rarely laugh-out-loud, but consistently engaging in Mortimer’s unmistakable way. Read the Review
Butter
Butter frames itself as a mystery but quickly becomes a richer story about appetite, control, and how women are taught to shrink themselves. Journalist Rika Machida’s fixation on accused killer Manako Kajii turns into a slow, transformative exchange that’s more about self-permission than solving a case. The lush, indulgent food writing is both powerful and occasionally overdone, and the novel’s refusal to clarify Kajii’s guilt may frustrate some readers. Hanako Footman’s narration suits the reflective tone. Thoughtful, provocative, and uneven, it’s a compelling listen even if it doesn’t fully satisfy. Read the Review
Operation Bounce House
Dinniman’s Operation Bounce House isn’t another absurd Dungeon Crawler Carl romp but a darker, cynical near-future invasion tale where humans attack altered human colonies. It’s a slow burn—future flashbacks set the scene—then becomes compulsive once action kicks in. Themes of gene modification, dehumanisation, and pay-to-play warfare underpin sharp social commentary, though characters feel underdeveloped and the plot sometimes reads like a film script. Travis Baldree’s narration is solid. A compelling one-off that’s thought-provoking rather than re-listenably joyous; fans expecting DCC’s absurd humour may be disappointed. Read the Review
Twice the Family
A memoir about adoption, twinhood, grief, and belonging that aims for emotional depth but often feels distant. Vivid reconstructions and speculative “maybe” passages made suspension of disbelief hard, and recurring themes grow repetitive rather than sharpening the pain of stillbirth and family strain. Audio production is clean, but Katie Hagaman’s deliberate, mechanical delivery widened the emotional gap. The book can stand alone and will resonate with some listeners, but this reviewer found it thoughtful yet ultimately unmooring rather than moving. Read the Review
Merchant Crab
Balthazar, a grumpy, money-obsessed crab, runs a pondside shop after gaining system powers—levels, skills, and a taste for pie. This reverse-isekai follows his hilarious, often darkly comic rise as adventurers, goblins, skeletons, and a worthy arch-nemesis orbit his little empire. Johnathan McClain’s over-the-top narration suits the tone. At 25+ hours per book, it’s a long, diverting romp with plenty of setup for later payoffs—comfortably entertaining, oddly warm, and excellent value for a single credit. Read the Review
Emberstone Farm 2
A cozy, slow-burn follow-up that trades tension for gentle routine: Violet and her helpers tend crops, craft, and prepare for a hinted World Boss a year away. The plot mostly ambles, favouring wholesome slice-of-life moments over high stakes, which makes it relaxing but occasionally meandering. Rylee Kuberra’s narration is warm and polished, and the book delivers comforting, low-stress farming sim vibes—perfect if you want a calm, day-by-day escape rather than urgent adventure. The Doomsayer Journeys
Three books for one credit and a light, absurd sci-fi tone made this an easy pick. The story takes a little while to get going, but settles into a dry, understated humour that lands more in smiles than big laughs. Bip and Handen make for an odd pairing, with Handen easily the more engaging of the two.The narration did not quite match the tone for me, but the story itself was easy to sink into. A fun, low-stakes trilogy with some interesting ideas. Read the Review
[Traveling] Merchant Crab
Book two opens with a lengthy 47-minute recap, then sends Balthazar on the road to rescue his favourite baker. The travelling merchant setup yields a string of side-quests, new friends, lopsided trades, and worldbuilding as the crab discovers towns, currency, and crowds beyond his pond. Johnathan McClain’s enthusiastic narration leans into Balthazar’s grumpiness. Another fun, light instalment that leans on charm and luck more than realism—perfect if you want more crabby commerce and adventure. Read the Review
Blood Demands
Blood Demands continues Noosh’s transformation into an Am’r-nafsh, plunging her from archival work into a violent, globe-spanning conspiracy. The brisk plot moves from Bucharest training to South America and Tierra del Fuego, revealing deeper Am’r history, Dracula ties, and vampire faction politics. Sandu (once Dracula) and Bagamil hunt those who framed them while Noosh learns combat and her new nature. The blend of intense violence and erotic interludes creates an unusual emotional balance, and Amber Benson’s narration convincingly anchors the worldbuilding. A satisfying, politically tinged addition that deepens the series’ danger and seduction. Read the Review
