Cinnamon Bun: Volume 2

Cinnamon Bun: Volume 2, written by RavensDagger, continues the adventures of Brocolli Bunch and Amaryllis as they make, well, Brocolli makes, friends with everyone she encounters, and blissfully making her way through the world.

This was a no-brainer for me after how much fun the first book was. In this book, the due becomes a trio with the addition of Awen, a shy human girl who needs to escape the clutches of her overbearing family.

A lot is going on in this book. The world we know expands as the trio of best friends starts exploring, and a larger picture starts to form. Lots of grinding and levelling up to get everyone into new skill ranks, and with it, the cover of book one finally makes sense. Plus, some larger world problems the trio will need to fix at some point in the future.

Lots of laugh-out-loud moments in this one, from tournaments where you can’t help but worry about the outcome for Brocolli, dragon encounters, and a love story brewing under Broccoli’s nose. This, in particular, is quite entertaining if a little mean to the person who has fallen for her (no spoilers). It’s only through knowing Broccoli isn’t the sort of person who’d enjoy playing someone along like that, her naïvety being the saving grace.

And, of course, the vibrating Wand of Cure Hysteria continues to amuse the hell out of me. The jokes around this are hilarious as Broccoli and Awen are apparently too naïve to know what it really is. But, when it was wielded as a weapon, it was surprisingly effective!

The new character, Awen, is a fun addition to the group. Starting from an incredibly sheltered upbringing, her growth as a character is handled well as she slowly comes out of her shell.

At one point, I found the story dragged ever so slightly, which was the diversion involving Rawrxd (pronounced: Roar-ex-dee). This part went on a little longer than I’d like but ultimately served a purpose overall. I didn’t experience this sensation in the first book. However, it didn’t detract too much and certainly won’t stop me when re-listening in the future.

Narrator Reba Buhr once again delivered a marvellous rendition. Her voices are varied and well suited to the characters. In addition, she brings the appropriate level of enthusiasm to the characters, Brocolli in particular, which must be exhausting!
