I have liked Billy Connolly for as far back as I can remember. My parents introduced me to him long before I was old enough to understand most of what he was saying. A lot of the jokes probably went over my head, but there was enough silliness to keep me cackling regardless. Since then, I’ve seen his various shows on TV, DVD and fortunate enough to see him live on stage once.
All that is to say, going into Windswept & Interesting, I already knew a lot of the jokes and anecdotes he drops in along the way. This is not a joke book, but Billy being Billy, familiar lines slip in like old friends as he recounts his life story.
What caught me off guard was the delivery. The audiobook has a strange rhythm, almost like he is talking at me rather than to me. It often feels like a straight read of the text without the spark or playful timing he is known for. The quips and one-liners come through more like a recital than a performance. Since I know how well he can deliver those same moments on stage, the difference stood out even more.
His actual life story is the part that kept me listening. Billy Connolly’s path from a traumatic childhood to becoming one of the most beloved comedians of his generation is remarkable in every sense. He survived things no one should have to face and still managed to build a life filled with humour, music, and creativity. Those sections are gripping. Even when the narration felt a bit brusque, almost like he was hurrying me along, the substance beneath it was hard to step away from.
Hearing him talk about the early years, the darker corners of his childhood, the breakthroughs, the music, and the chaos of becoming “Billy Connolly” is deeply compelling. It is a reminder that the person behind the legend is complicated, scarred, and unexpectedly gentle in places. The performance may not have the warmth or wink of his live shows, but the story underneath is rich, sad, funny, and very much him.
Windswept & Interesting may not be the definitive Billy Connolly experience. That will always be him on stage. It is, however, a thoughtful and often moving look at the life that shaped him. The storytelling outshines the narration, but there is plenty here for long-time fans, even if you already know half the punchlines by heart.
