The Last Love Note

The Last Love Note

Read Time: 2 Minutes

Emma Grey’s The Last Love Note is a heartfelt exploration of love, loss, and the courage to embrace life anew. Part romantic comedy, part emotional gut-punch, it frequently dances on the thin line between them with honesty and heart. Awkward laughs, quiet grief, and sharp observations on life are what you’ll find here.

We follow the emotional tribulations of Kate Whittaker, a widow navigating the grief of losing the man she’d been with since she was in high school while raising her young son, Charlie, who never really got to know his dad, but feels the loss just as keenly.

The novel opens with a chaotic moment that sets the tone for the kind of life Kate has. Charlie discovered a grenade among his late father’s belongings, setting off a chain of events that reintroduce Kate to the possibilities of love and connection.

Kate is surrounded by a cast of limpet-like friends who have helped her through the turmoil. Grace, her vivacious and always-on-the-lookout best friend, Hugh Lancaster, her enigmatic boss that has always been in the wings, her mother who is a little overbearing and self-absorbed, and Justin, the ruggedly sexy new neighbor.

When fate conspires to forcibly ground Kate and Hugh for a long weekend together just outside of Byron Bay, Kate gets her first time to unwind and let go, and see that maybe things could be different, should she chose to allow it.

Much of the story unfolds in flashback, where we experience the final days of Kate’s husband Cam as he succumbs to a cruel, degenerative disease. These parts are raw and rough to listen to at times, but never gratuitous. They also opened my eyes to how little I knew about the condition, and how it impacts not just the person suffering, but their loved ones.

Narration by Leeanna Walsman was good, though I did make note of an occasional background sound. Nothing too dramatic and certainly not enough to stop my enjoyment of the book. Walsman’s voice was easy to listen to throughout

The Last Love Note is a beautifully written story about grief, love, and learning to move forward without forgetting the past. The balance of humour is right to help lighten the emotional moments without diminishing their impact. It had me laughing out loud one minute and tearing up the next.
