Wyrd Gods

Wyrd Gods, written by Susana Imaginario, contains more gods and minor deities than you can poke a stick at, and early on, I realised I had to pay close attention or else I’d get lost. There’s a lot going on, with Greek gods scheming against Norse gods and vice-versa, with our heroine, Illena caught in the middle.

Most of the story of Wyrd Gods (pronounced “weird” if you’re wondering… means “fated’) is told from Illena’s point of view. Illena is a god trapped in the body of a mortal. Parts of her memory have been erased, so has no idea why she, an Olympian god, has been stripped of her powers and sent to Niflheim, the Norse underworld.

What follows is an intriguing mystery filled with gods and mythological creatures. Illena’s story is the main focus, the pace of which keeps the story moving along nicely. Her tale is interspersed with “interludes” – flashbacks to other times when Illena isn’t the main focus, and we switch point-of-view to the upper-echelon gods and their scheming. These interludes help fill in the details and give clues to what is going on, without being an “info dump”.

I mentioned at the top that it’s important to pay close attention. There are a lot of characters to follow in this story, and that is by no means a bad thing, but with no background in mythological history, keeping track of who was who demanded a lot of attention be paid.

Narration by Sarah Kempton was top-notch. A wide array of voices, great pacing and clarity, with no issues to mention. Certainly pleasant with an easy voice to listen to.

Overall, a great mash-up of multiple pantheons and myths. Filled with mystery, action, a touch of romance, and gods doing what they do best – trying to outdo all the others.
