I am beginning to wonder if it’s worth continuing with this story. It’s light-hearted fun with an over-powered MC that can just cakewalk through every situation. Nothing in the two books so far even comes close to being a threat.
When you’ve defeated the old gods, and the new ones don’t come close to their power, what else is there?
There’s a distinct lack of direction or purpose, beyond some general handwaving towards an overall issue. Harold wants to find what happened to his missing phylacteries while also looking into the disappearance of “the system” but beyond that, the story generally meanders along.
Sure, there’s the training of the Limpet which is nice to see that’s Harold isn’t going to just dispose of her at the earliest convenience, but generally everyone here seems to be comedic sidekick, even Harold himself at times.
This one introduces a few new characters – mantis’ (i.e. praying mantis’ like on the cover) that are about as dumb as rocks and about annoying as one in your shoe. I think at one point it’s mentioned they’re 100 years old or so, yet they carry on like lobotomised toddlers.
I’m trying to work out if there’s any more to the story than just a candy equivalent – nice while being consumed but ultimately unfulfilling. A bit of a theme with Ravensdagger and their other work, as I feel the same is true for the Cinnamon Bun series.
Will I continue with it? I’m leaning towards a solid “probably” because it is a fun story even if it doesn’t really feel like it’s going anywhere.
