Bound to End Badly

Read Time: 2 Minutes

Bound to End Badly, written by R. L. Tiochta, is a superb example of dark romantic comedy. Set in Derby (UK), and follows Peter and Maze as they stumble through the dating scene and ever so slowly towards each other. Tiochta gives us alternating glimpses into the lives of Peter and Maze, where something isn’t quite right… and not just because there’s a serial killer on the loose.

For a story handled in such a humorous, lightweight telling, there’s also a serious, darker side that unravels ever so slowly. Glimpses and hints are peppered throughout. The characters are easy to like and root for, easy to connect with so you get fully invested in their struggles.

I listened to this in two sittings because I just couldn’t stop. I needed to know what was happening, what came next, what was really going on. It kept me hooked into way too late in the night for someone who also works a day job.

It’s hard to say too much without giving away some major plot points, so I’ll refrain from that. Instead what I will say is I could picture this being adapted into a funny, if rather bawdy, romantic comedy for the screen. The story played out so vividly in my mind, a mark of a great story being told.

Narration by the talented Sarah Kempton was excellent and suited the story and characters well. This is the second book I’ve heard done by Sarah and will be keeping my eyes open for more. Great timing and delivery, no production issues that I noticed. Distinct character voices. All around great job.

Do yourself a favour and give this book a listen. This will certainly be on my list of books to listen to again.
