#CassiNova is a genuinely funny, warm and unexpectedly sweet romcom that had me laughing more often than I expected. I went in expecting something light and some chuckles and ended up with an almost non-stop laugh-out-loud funny story that’s also warm and surprisingly sweet.
The story follows two leads with very different lives. Samantha Cassidy is the star of a hit sci-fi show, complete with a passionate fanbase still fuming over an unpopular character death. Meanwhile, Alex Novato is a landscape designer by day and a struggling writer by night, who keeps herself sharp by playing with fan fiction.
When Alex posts a particularly good piece about Sam’s character, Sam and her best friend Jade decide that they absolutely need to meet this mystery writer. Their attempts to act cool while basically stalking her were some of the funniest moments in the whole book. Trying hard not to bust out laughing while everyone in the house was sleeping took quite the effort.
Both leads are easy to love. Sam is dorky, goofy and trying her best to navigate Hollywood expectations while keeping her real self under wraps. Alex is cautious and wounded from past tragedy. Their chemistry was virtually instantaneous, but the romance takes its time.
It feels like a natural progression rather than something rushed for the sake of plot and matched their characters, with each of them carrying believable hangups that they have to work through before anything real can happen.
Jen Jayden’s narration is pleasant and easy to listen to. The main characters come through clearly and with the right emotion. Some of the side voices blur a little, but it never pulled me out of the story or got in the way of the humour. The production is clean, and the tone suits the rom-com style well.
One review I saw before deciding to buy it described it as having the vibe of a screwball romantic comedy, and that was 100% what I was in the mood for. Hilarious and complete with awkward first meetings, earnest confessions, and plenty of absurd situations. The writing is sharp, and the dialogue is genuinely funny rather than trying too hard to be clever.
Honestly, I loved it. This is one of those audiobooks I can see myself returning to whenever I want something fun and wholehearted. I will absolutely be diving into more of Lori G. Matthews’ work, because if her back catalogue is anywhere near this charming, I am in for a good time.
