Beware of Chicken 4

Beware of Chicken 4

Read Time: 2 Minutes

I came into Beware of Chicken 4 with one big question, after Book 3’s ramped-up action and the reveal of Jin’s power, how much would the story slow down again? Turns out the answer is it slows, but mostly to regroup, reassess, and drop some heavy worldbuilding.

This volume spends less time on madcap farming or big tournament showdowns. Instead you get a quieter stretch where the story leans hard on slice-of-life, relationships, and lore. Jin is about to become a father. The farm and its people settle into something closer to normal life, with festivals, home life, and what passes for domestic calm in a xianxia world. I did not always love the slower pace. It felt less dynamic than the last ride.

What it does very well is expand context. There are extended back-stories, history dumps about the region, the hills, clans, and past disasters, and a firmer sense of where everyone stands in the power hierarchy. For readers who enjoy world-building, this volume delivers more than a few solid chapters.

A lot of secondary characters get their time to breathe, the cast grows, and it is clear the series is laying foundations for something bigger down the line.

Narration by Travis Baldree remains steady and comforting, matching the calmer, home-body vibe of this book. It helps smooth over slower patches, though it cannot entirely hide when the pacing drags or when chapters centre on side characters whose names do not stick with me.

If I am honest, Beware of Chicken 4 feels like a rest stop in a long journey. It rarely dazzles, but it gives you time to catch your breath, grow attached to the wider cast, and understand more of the world’s bones. It is gentler than Book 3, but that is not a knock. It leaves me curious what happens next, when the story picks up again.
