Read Time: 2 Minutes
I admit to waiting longer than I should have to get to book two in the Beware of Chicken series. I was a little worried after reading a few posts were people complained that the story seemed to stall and not be as good as the first. It’s my own fault, really. I enjoyed the first so much I should have ignored them and just got straight into it! Just as laid-back and humorous as the first, I fell instantly back in love with this world.
Jin Rou continues to live out his life on the farm, surrounded by friends and spirit animals that can kick the snot out of any bandit or bad guys they happen across. This book is actually less about Jin and more about the adventures of animal companions and friends, making for an interesting change of pace from the first.
Sure, there’s still much about Jin and him getting the farm ready, but he’s less of the focus. Instead, we get adventures with Washy the carp, Tigger the cat, Big D the rooster and many of the supporting characters.
And it’s all so adorably wholesome and laid-back. We also get a lot more history of the Xianxia-style land that Jin has found himself in. Lots of world building and setting up things that’ll pay off no doubt in future books in the series.
I still have a lot of trouble following the names, being that I am so unfamiliar Chinese style names, but Casualfarmer (the author) has done a great job giving each character a distinct personality that it doesn’t really matter.
Narrated by Travis Baldree who I can only say much the same thing about as the first. He delivers his trademark excellent performance. Easy to listen to, excellent pacing and time, and top-notch production values.
If you’re looking for something easy, something charming, something slice-of-life with a bit of action and humour thrown in, then give this series a go. At over 50 hours so far (and I see book four will add another 30 onto that) there’s heaps of story to keep you occupied. It’s certainly keeping my ears busy! On to the next one!
