Liches Get Stitches

This book was a lot of fun. Maud, the village witch, becomes a lich by complete accident… but that’s not going to stop her from living her life with her cat, Jenkins, and stopping to admire the bees in her garden. Sure, she may need to resurrect them from the dead, but what is a happy-go-lucky lich supposed to do?

First off, this isn’t a horrific tale of a lich murdering villagers and taking over a kingdom. Well, it sort of is, but it’s lighthearted and fun, and Maud is such a likable, entertaining character. She would be quite content to live out her post-death life in her cottage in the woods, but of course, do-good paladins and other heroes don’t want her alive.

There’s a lot of slice-of-life type stuff going on, interspersed with raising the dead and sewing heads back on to bodies. From undead geese and checked, shopping for clothing fabric and siege weapons, and making sure her minions smell nice. The action is well-paced, with battles never feeling like they’re one-sided and a foregone conclusion.

Ella Lynch was a superb choice for narrator. This was my first narration by Ella, and she embodies the character so well. Light and cheery, and very well done. The comedy is rather dark, and being offset with the bubbly personality that Ella infuses into the characters works fantastically. I’ll certainly be looking through her back catalogue to see what else she has narrated. Production was excellent as well, with no background noises or noticeable mistakes.

Obviously, I’ll be continuing with this series. Book two – Liching Hour – is already available on Audible, and I see book three – Lich, Please – is out on kindle, so surely will be along on audio soon enough as well. Five stars all day.
