Zeus Is Dead

Gods and muses and mortals, oh my!

Review by: The Audiobook ReviewI was a little disappointed with Zeus Is Dead by Michael G Munz, because the premise sounded so fun. It felt as though it was trying just a little too hard to be funny, with lots of nonsequiturs and winks to the reader. Many of these just fell flat and broke the pace of the story. More judicious editing could have shortened the runtime by a few hours by knocking out a good portion of these. Overall, the story isn't dreadful, but it's not one I think I'd listen to again.

So, no spoilers, but Zeus is dead. It's right there in the title. Murdered by an unknown assailant. Most of the other gods in the pantheon are thrilled because Zeus' edict of staying out of the lives of mortals died with him. So they're all back and lapping up the spotlight and worship of the adoring public.

Not all the gods are happy though. Apollo wants his father's killers to pay. With the help of a muse, a TV producer, and a sceptic, they begin a quest to resurrect Zeus and take back Mount Olympus.

Narration by Travis Baldree was okay. Nothing stand-out, but got the job done. Enough variation between the voices to keep the characters separated, and no obvious production issues. This book is a few years old now, and looking at his catalogue on Audible he's done quite a few, so I'd be interested to see if his style has improved at all.

Narration Sample

All up, not a dreadful story but one I feel could have benefited from some aggressive editing to improve the overall flow.
