An Interesting Look Into What We Don't See

Review by: The Audiobook ReviewWritten by Dennis John Woods, Black Flag Journals was an interesting look into what we don't see and don't hear about. The format is of Woods' war journals, written over the course of his multiple tours of Iraq and Afghanistan.

The style of writing fits the image I have of Woods, and I guess military personnel in general in that the vast majority of sentences are written in a direct, no-nonsense kind of way. Clipped and concise while imparting the right amount of information.

His journals, of course, are from his perspective and memory of the events as he jotted them down, which he does remind us of. That said, they work to give one a thoroughly interesting and at the same time harrowing glimpse into the theatre of war.

I'm in two minds over the narration. Lee David Foreman's voice I think suited the part, though the more I listened the more issues I found. Edits in the story were obvious, with a not subtle change of tone or quality. Occasionally the volume would waver. Distracting enough that I needed to take note of it.

Overall, I'm glad I listened to it as it was a unique perspective, yet let down by the narration.

I was given this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. I have not let this gift affect nor influence my opinions of this audiobook and have left an honest review.
